ROBIN’S SHOW REVIEW & TICKET GIVEAWAY: Cougar the Musical
Donna Moore’s Cougar the Musical got its World Premiere this summer under the direction of Tony Award and Drama Desk Nominated director/choreographer Lynne Taylor- Corbett at St. Luke’s Theatre (308 West 46th Street in NYC).
The show features three very different strong, appealing women with the hots for young men. They let their inner cougar roar and purr, finding self-love and empowerment in the process. The cast of three talented over-forty women and one versatile and appealing boy toy (hysterical as a female Korean manicurist) sing and dance their way through a range of original songs (loved the song Mother’s Love), from grinding blues, to doo-wop, to pop to “Julio”; a romantic ballad, sung to a vibrator (http://www.youtube.com/cougarthemusical ). Cougar the Musical takes you from the Cougar Bar to nail salon to boudoir and back as the women learn to say “yes” to getting older, “yes” to trust and friendship and “yes” to proving that love is ageless. You are left feeling empowered, and it makes for a fun girls night out (even though there were some men in the audience…accompanied by women).
The cast includes: Danny Bernardy (Off Broadway: Every Girl Gets Her Man, Iphigenia Crash Land Falls), Brenda Braxton (Broadway: Smokey Joe’s Cafe, Tony Nomination, Chicago, Dream Girls, Jelly’s Last Jam; Cats, Legs Diamond), Catherine Porter (Broadway: Next to Normal, London ‘s West End Sunset Boulevard, Tonight’s the Night, Only the Lonely), Babs Winn (Off Broadway: Love is Where You Find It, The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow, Take This Show and Shove It, Lola Victoria’s Monday Marquee). Creative team includes: Jana Zielonka (Musical Director), Josh Iacovelli (Set Designer, Sound Designer), and Dustin Cross (Costume Designer).
Playing Schedule: Wednesday at 8PM; Friday at 8PM; Saturday at 2PM; Sunday at 2PM. Running Time: 90 Minutes.
ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT: Moore has been on every side of the camera and stage for over 40 years. Moore has done stand-up, national commercials, headlined concerts, political comedy groups and enjoyed a three and a half year run in cabaret. And it all began at age 9 when she wrote a short play that was featured on the pilot of the Emmy Award-winning PBS TV show, “ZOOM,” which she also starred in two years later- making her the only performer/writer on the celebrated series.
In an effort to redefine the term, Ms. Moore wants to humanize the word ‘cougar’; no longer does she want these strong, determined women to be looked at as ‘aggressive women on the prowl’. She believes that these women are after a more matriarchal system after living life through today’s millennia of patriarchal dictation.
Moore explains that women need to embrace their life and their life decisions in order to own their inner cougar! As a woman turning 50 this year, Moore feels the need to say “yes” to embracing all of the aspects that make her a strong woman and contribution to the planet, including her health, her heart, her body, her intuition, her love and light, her capacity for giving and receiving joy, her humor, her intelligence, her ability to forgive herself and others, her need to be responsible for the energy she puts out in the world, and her ability to create boundaries with others so she can continue and expand her love and light in the world. The power of positive outlook is something Moore knows about first hand, as she used positive affirmations to cure herself of Lupus. She sees how it can change someone whole outlook and is looking to help create more positive and powerful “cougars.”
“The Wednesday is the New Thursday” dance party (with disco hits from the 70s and 80s) is held pre-show each Wednesday performance. With free Cougartinis*
