Jacqueline Novak: Get On Your Knees: Show Review by Hillary Hershkowitz
I admit that I could hardly wait to see Jacqueline Novak: Get On Your Knees, a new Off-Broadway show that recently opened at the Cherry Lane Theatre. But, I had some hesitation…what’s there to say about blow-jobs that hasn’t been discussed ad nauseam by the gals of Sex and the City!?
Turns out there’s a lot — 75-minutes worth without an intermission!
Novak takes us on a journey from her fumbling adolescent experiences giving blow-jobs to inexperienced high school boyfriends, through her head-loving college days to the present day in a monogamous hetero relationship. She executes it all flawlessly while weaving poetic prose, fiery humor, and impeccable physical comedy chockful of foul penis-oriented language, accompanied by cringeworthy gyrations and juggling balls (not the sports-kind).
This show may not appeal to everyone, like the stone-faced guy sitting next to me (or on a first-date), but the ambiance of the room was overwhelmingly filled with people doubling over in laughter.
Despite the R-rated content, Novak, a comic genius, cleverly manages to flip the script on female sexuality and leaves the audience with an unexpected takeaway about male and female roles in the bedroom and society. She questions why the penis is seen as such a macho appendage and the vulva, a receptacle for male dominance. What results is a philosophical examination of the femininity of the penis and the stoicism of the vulva that is a part feminist outcry, part coming-of-age tale of victory.
Jacqueline Novak: Get On Your Knees is presented by Natasha Lyonne (Orange Is the New Black, Russian Dolls), and executive produced by Mike Birbiglia. Mike Lavoie and Carlee Briglia are producers.
The limited engagement runs through August 18.

there is nothing men like better than women getting together and talking about performing oral sex. There is peer pressure and they will egg each other on. Even ones who have not done it (rarer than ever) will become curious and with a little wine they will lose their inhibitions and satisfy their curiosity. I don’t know why women would put on such a play or why young women would laugh but it just adds to the dialog of sexual inequality as many complain that woman do it far more than is reciprocated but hard to say it is a “job” when the subject of jokes by women
