Cool Outdoor Games for Family & Adult Fun by Robin Gorman Newman

If you’re like me, given the Pandemic, I’ve been spending more time in our backyard.  That has included inviting friends for social distance visits, bringing in food….and looking for activities that we can safely share.  This has inspired me to seek out cool games we can play, and these also work for parks, beaches, and event a home space if you have one that works.

Having younger children doesn’t mean you can’t also enjoy outdoor games with them. Cycling is a great way to get outdoors, and getting a child bike seat means little ones can enjoy safely too.

Here’s a few of my favorites that I’d like to share…

LADDER GOLF – The original Ladder Ball game since 2003

This Ladder Golf brand double Ladder Ball Tournament Edition comes with everything 2 to 4 players need to play a game of Ladder Ball. This set is super fast and simple to setup (even I could do it), and very solid and sturdy.  Made of hardwood, it comes real golf balls, and has brass hardware and unbreakable rungs. Though a bit on the weighty side, the setup was easy, and you can break it down for compact storage.  Comes in a convenient green cloth carrying back for easy transport.

We really enjoyed playing this.  Just challenging enough to be fun ‘n satisfying.  I’m not a golfer, but no need to be to have a good time with Ladder Golf.  The set includes 2 Hardwood Game Ladders, 1 Set of 3 Green bolas, 1 Set of 3 White bolas, and a Nylon Carrying Bag.

To play….simply space the game ladders about 15 feet apart and start tossing your bolas. Each player tosses all 3 golf ball bolas, then the next player tosses all 3 bolas. The first one to 21 without going over is the winner! The top rung is worth 3 points, middle is 2 and the bottom rung is 1 point.

It also comes as a single ladder, and golf ball bolas come in additional colors, and there is an outdoor score card you can purchase.

MOLKKY

Mölkky is a durable and environmentally friendly game for everyone – regardless of your age or fitness level. It is an award-winner and genuine Finnish design manufactured in Finland. Made of high quality wood, it is neatly packaged in a wooden crate with rope carrying handles.

To play….

Beginning the game:
First player throws the skittle at the grouping and tries to knock over pins. Mölkky is always thrown underhand.

Fallen pin:
A pin is not considered fallen if it is leaning on another pin or on the Mölkky throwing skittle. After a throw, fallen pins are put upright at the place where they fell.

Scoring:
If one pin falls, the score = the number on the pin. When more than one fall, the score = the number of fallen pins.

Ending the game:
If a player misses (has no score) three times in a row, he/she is out of game and acts as the scorekeeper. The game ends when the first player reaches exactly 50 points. If one scores over 50, that players score is lowered to 25.

The company makes lots of other cool looking games, and if you’re already a huge Molkky fan, you will want to check out their fun fan merchandise.

This, too, was a super easy setup, and all enjoyed.

BOTTLE BASH

The Poleish Sports™ Bottle Bash Game combines the games of disc golf and horseshoes with a few new twists. The objective is to knock your opponent’s bottle off the pole by throwing the disc.

The set includes 2 aluminum poles with a built-in scoring system, 2 non breakable thick plastic bottles, 2 ground stakes, 1 disc, and a mesh storage carrying bag.  You play with two or four players, and it’s a cool team game.

It’s a super easy and quick setup, and depending on the level of challenge you want, you can change the throwing distance to your target.

To play…..Defending team must try to catch the bottle, disc, or both.  Dropped disc is 1 point.  Dropped bottle is 2 points.  Dropped bottle and disc is 3 points. The first team to 21 points wins.

We had a good time playing this, and my friend’s daughter, 12, particularly liked it.  It’s ideal for ages 8 and up.

It’s also available in a NASCAR and USA colors versions.

Note: I was generously gifted each game by the manufacturer, but my opinions are my own.
