Ambitious Homemaking: A Prelude to an Online Business? by Heather Bowles
Good Saturday morning, friends! I think it’s time for me to come clean (Pun totally intended). I’ve been researching the art of soapmaking in recent weeks, and last night, I decided that it’s time to get serious about putting together the required supplies. It seems to be the next logical step in my journey as a homemaker that I attempt this. I’ve already been concocting our laundry detergent for some months, and I’ve finally perfected that recipe to a point that it works perfectly with our machine, makes our clothes smell as good, if not better than store bought brands, and is as cost effective as I can possibly get. In order to avoid boredom, it’s time to move on to grander things.
It has become my secret hope that this may turn into something greater than just a way to cut corners in our household. In my research on the topic, I’ve come across a few online Etsy style shops marketing beautiful soaps at prices that seem outrageous to me, given the cost of supplies. So, this morning, I’m going to be running around to some local used bookstores, pricing some soapmaking recipe books, and making a list of supplies I need to make this work. If my foray into homemade laundry detergent was any indication, it make take a couple months to get my groove, but with any luck at all, this could be the thing that boosts our household back into a reasonably comfortable income bracket, while still affording me the opportunity to watch my child grow into the beautiful woman I hope to witness her become.
I’ll keep you posted as things develop. Wish me luck!

Good luck Heather! Look forward to hearing about your new venture. My aunt used to make homemade soaps and sold them at local Farmer’s markets. You might want to check that out as well.
