Back Out of the Fog – by Lisa Kelly

Wow!  A lot of time has passed since I was last here.  Can you believe I forgot that I blogged here?  I really did.  After Miss Ava was born, I spent a good deal of weeks in a weird space between absolute joy and utter misery.  After navigating a high risk pregnancy, I had successfully delivered a perfect baby girl.  JOY!!  Also, working full-time, going to college full-time, AND a baby?  At 45??  MISERY!!!

For the longest time, I wrote off all of the symptoms of my “funk” to being exhausted and mentally torn between joy and misery.  I was tired because I had a newborn that I was trying unsuccessfully to breastfeed.  I was frustrated because I was chained to the stupid breast pump.  My hair was losing it’s shine and falling out because my hormones were re-balancing.  I was meaner than normal to family and friends because no one understood how hard my life was.  I had excuses to explain away all of it until the day I realized I had forgotten our daughter’s middle name.  Totally.  I repeated Ava over and over again and it just would not come to me.  What kind of person can stay on the honor roll but can’t remember what she named her baby?  One whose system was seriously depleted.

Since Ava’s birth, I finished my first college degree and we traveled to 17 states; more traveling than I ever did before she was born.  I ended up in urgent care due to a sinus infection and the doctor there noted that I seemed more exhausted than I should be.  Long story short, they ended up doing a lot of blood work and found I was dangerously depleted in Vitamin B6, B12 and D as well as magnesium and a couple of other things.  I had an IV treatment to jump start my system and have since taken up a juice regimine.  My husband bought me a fancy juicer and every day I juice kale, spinach, half a beet, an apple and an orange then I pop a handful of supplements.

If you’re a new mom and feel like you are in a fog, it may be more than you realize.  Women are particularly skilled at pushing through just about anything but often we shouldn’t.   Older women simply do not bounce back as well as young women.  If you feel like something is definitely out of whack, don’t ignore it.   At the very least, take a good multi-vitamin made for women.

Take care of yourselves!

  2. So glad you are back, Lisa!! Thanks for reminding us Later Moms to remember to take care of ourselves! I have Lyme Disease and need to be very attuned to my body because with all of the intensive meds I take, my immune system is consequently on the precipice. In fact I had 2 HIGHLY active days both yesterday and today. I woke up today feeling worn and as if I were getting a cold. I knew I pushed my body too much the day before. I took my plethora of immune boosting supplements and managed to soar through the day today. By tomorrow, though, I’ll be in bed recuperating. Everyone should listen to their bodies. Otherwise we will end up in the hospital like a worn dish towel like I was last year. Ladies, know your limits!!!
