Princess Phooey at TADA! Youth Theater: Kids Show Review by Kirsten Augestad
The Perfect Message! TADA! Youth Theater’s musical revival of Princess Phooey hit just the right notes with a delightful tone and message. From the moment you walk into the theater until the very last scene, the excitement can be felt by the Ensemble as well as the audience.
Coined as a ‘musical fairy tale like no other’, Ermangarde (Princess Phooey) is a Princess who does not want to play by the rules. When her mother and father go away, her sister Elessia is put in charge. She takes it upon herself to teach Ermangarde how to be a proper Princess because, so far, Ermangarde is proving to be anything but a proper royal. However, it is clear Ermangarde does not place the same importance on how to look and act pretty as her sister does. Morbidia, the ‘black sheep’ of the Good Fairies, is also in agreement that such importance should not be placed on the superficialities of life and that it is very important to be true to yourself and be who you need to be.
Ermangarde also likes to keep the company of chambermaids and stable boys, proving that it is perfectly fine to interact with people of all parts of society. These themes that are sung with such passion by all members of the Ensemble make for an uplifting message in today’s times. Book and Lyrics are by Lisa Diana Shapiro, Music by Eric Rockwell, Direction by Janine Nina Trevens and Choreography by Joanna Greer.
Humor runs through the music and makes for a most delightful experience. The singing was impressive, and the show flowed nicely. You will end up rooting for the talented kid performers and watching the delight on the children’s faces in the audience.
Princess Phooey is the perfect original musical experience with a brilliant theme to bring your kids to enjoy this summer!
