Adapted from the hit film by its Academy Award-winning screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin and directed by Tony winner Matthew Warchus (God of Carnage, The Norman Conquests), GHOST The Musical features out of this world special effects and illusions, a touching love story, intrigue, humor and a pop/rock score by Grammy(R) winners Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) and Glen Ballard (Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror,” Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know”).

In this new musical, Richard Fleeshman and Caissie Levy play the Patrick Swayze (Sam) and Demi Moore (Molly) roles….not an easy romantic pairing act to follow.  Both sing well and have appeal and project sensuality….though the score leaves a lot to be desired with no memorable tunes, so neither has the opportunity to truly shine in a big musical way.  Bryce Pinkham plays the conniving Carl, their friend who winds up being the bad guy.  He has stage presence and delivers a convincing portrayal.  A real standout is newcomer Da’vine Joy Randolph as the quirky, loud-mouthed psychic Oda Mae Brown ….played by Whoopi Goldberg in the movie….who adds welcome comic relief, and her voice and delivery pack a punch.

Ashley Wallen’s choreography has a frenzied pace, ala the uber fast-paced lifestyle of New Yorkers….in keeping with the general tone of the show.  The real star here is the projected illusions/special effects.  You can’t take your eyes off the stage…you don’t want to miss a moment of the high tech eye candy.  From cityscapes to pouring rain, and more, there’s never a dull visual moment…and they keep on coming!

Jon Driscoll, video and production designer, kicked into impressive high gear with this production.  The most incredible (or awesome…to quote my son) sequence was in Act I in the subway system….featuring a rap number performed by a territorial ghost who Sam begs to teach him to walk through doors and move objects/people.  Paul Kieve was responsible for the illusions in the show… taking the effects to new heights….literally…..when the deceased are carted off to Hell.

The performance I saw got a standing ovation.  GHOST The Musical is a uniquely memorable theatrical experience.
