Theatre Blogger: MILES THORN: Master Illusionist – Show Review by Robin Gorman Newman
After three sold-out engagements on 42nd Street last holiday season, Spring & Summer 2016, Master Illusionist: Miles Thorn brings his magic and illusion show back to Times Square bigger and better than ever.
Thorn grew up in Astoria, N.Y. and began performing at the age of 15. He is also the Season 1 Winner of New York’s Got Talent. Slim, with a shaved head, intense gaze, tatoos and a hip-hop style to his graceful movements, Thorn (and his able female assistant) blend an urban vibe with Las Vegas glitz.
The high energy show invites audience participation, both adults and children, and it’s a pleaser for all ages. Whether juggling machetes, engaging with disappearing doves, tearing up newspapers that reassembly, or more, Thorn is on his game. Mystifying standouts include a game of Russian Roulette and a mind boggling puzzle piece trick. My son, 13 enjoyed, and his 10 year old friend was at times quite awestruck.
Skilled illusionist… yes…but what stands out equally as much is his sincerity and the magical muscle of his spoken word meant to inspire no matter your background. The message is heartfelt. He speaks often of people chasing dreams in life and sometimes encountering darkness and roadblocks. But, they should never lose hope, as he didn’t, in his quest to bring his magical prowess to the stage. Specifically, he cites the organization Project Semicolon, According to their website, the global non-profit is a “movement dedicated to presenting hope and love for those who are struggling with mental illness, suicide, addiction and self-injury.”
After the 90 minute show (with one intermission), you can find Thorn in the lobby who will happily sign posters for sale that help support the act, and he will pose for photos with fans. You can’t help but wish this young, determined talent, continued success, as he endeavors to serve as a positive role model for others.
